Not only can you replace with nimh but they are the better choice of battery as they have benefits that their nicd counterparts don t.

While nimh and nicd rechargeable batteries can be easily installed installing alkaline batteries in your solar lights can damage them to the extent that you may no longer be able to replace them with rechargeable batteries.
While it s always possible incompatible nimh cells could damage a nicd charging circuit in the solar lights it s more likely the inadequate charging of the nimh cells by the nicd charging circuit.
I have heard that these batteries are not so good for the environment because they contain toxic chemicals see wikipedia.
All they need is either nimh nickel metal hydride or nicd type rechargeable battery.
